Hallie arrived at SACS as a boarder at the Junior School in 1959, a year
after I came to the school, so I got to know him over a period of about 8
years. I think his closest friends were his fellow boarders, and Sean Day,
Peter Theron and Pharrel Wener have all emailed to recall those days.
All of us remember Hallie as one of the finest athletes in the school. He
was awarded his Blue for rugby and was selected for the WP Craven Week
rugby team. He was a talented cricketer as well, and played with me in first
and second team games.
Hallie was not just a great athlete, but more importantly a great sportsman.
His approach to sport was the same as his approach to life. Play hard, but
never unfairly. I’ve always believed that you play sport first and foremost
for enjoyment, and Hallie exemplified this approach.
One comment that has come through from a number of his classmates was
that he came across as a larger-than-life personality. I certainly saw this
aspect, but it was coupled with a down-to-earth attitude which made him
a good friend to have.
Hallie will be sadly missed, but fondly remembered by all of us.
