DENNIS SNYMAN
Dennis' name is included on the list of those from our year who died. He matriculated in 1967, but it was almost as though he was a member of our class year as he played on all our teams.
It was with a sad heart that I read about Dennis Snyman’s death via your e-mail.
The Old Boys Union does a great service of keeping us informed about our old chums !
Dennis arrived, as I recollect, at SACS high school from Kimberley Boys to follow in his Dads footsteps, as Snyman senior had been a SACS scholar.
The Snyman’s were sheep farmers from Prieska in the Karoo so naturally he became a boarder.
My earliest memory of Dennis was his jovial, robust and competitive spirit.
We became firm mates and participated in the same rugby and cricket teams throughout our high school days.
I was always proud to be a team mate of Dennis because of his determined but fair sporting character.
We became SACS sport soldiers plotting the fall of our enemies Rondebosch, Bishops, Wynberg ……
It is with glee, that I recall how we planned the dismissal of Robert Cheetham, the left handed captain of Bishops to a leg side stumping.
Memories flood back about our rugby and cricket matches and I can happily say we won many more than we lost.
I remember our mix up batting together at the 1967 Nuffield Schools week in East London when I got run out for 49. At the time it seemed a tragedy !
I know that the last few years have been difficult for Dennis with ill health, but I also know he would have faced the challenge with a steely determination.
Please pass on my sincere condolences to his family.
Regards,
John vd Spuy
